Strøm

Strøm is a family of water-filtering shakers made from compression-molded and treated biochar, derived from food waste. The design uses surface contact with highly porous and magnetized char to filter water more effectively then membrane filtration. Individual filtering sticks can be slid into the mouth of water bottles, carafes, or glasses to filter water through movement.

We developed this product to meet Project Draw Down and UN SDG goals for clean water access, developing a system where waste can be transformed into feedstock for safe water management. We developed initial powdered char in the lab, tested it in water samples, then then developed prototypes and manufacturing pathways for deployable water shakers.
